In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

As horror literature and film rise in popularity, Charles L. Crow’s American Gothic attempts to deepen our understanding of the context of Gothic in the United States. Part of the History of the Gothic series, American Gothic does not pretend to be a compendium of all Gothic history. Instead Crow follows four specific time periods in American history, tying them to Gothic literature. The series goal is actually to discover “groundbreaking scholarship” in the genre. Crow accomplishes this goal through careful connection between history and Gothic, showing the shifting definitions through numerous examples.
