About the Event

California Rare Book School (CalRBS) Summer 2023 courses will be offered for the first time at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C, in addition to San Francisco, Los Angeles and online.

CalRBS offers workshops, lectures, classes, and certificate programs aimed at professionals and members of the public who care about the artifacts of the past, the documents of the present, and their potential to change the course of our future.  Scholarship deadline is: 1 May 2023.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2005, the California Rare Book School (CalRBS) is a non-degree education program dedicated to providing the knowledge and skills required by collectors and professionals working in all aspects of the library, special collection, archives, museums, and rare book community, as well as for students interested in entering the field of justice studies, library ethics, critical librarianship, and rare book conservation and preservation.

CalRBS is a project of the Department of Information Studies at the School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. CalRBS is supported by an informal consortium of many of the academic and research libraries and antiquarian booksellers of Southern California.

CalRBS listings of in-person and online courses can be found at https://www.calrbs.org/courses/upcoming-courses/

Click on the course titles to view detailed descriptions, faculty biographies, along with the schedule, format, location, fee for each offering, and a yellow application button. Deadline for course applications is: Monday, May 1st, 2023. Applications received after that date will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all available seats are filled, capped at 12 participants for in-person courses and at 20, for online courses.

A limited number of scholarship awards are available to librarians, archivists, scholars, booksellers, collectors, graduate students, and others. All course applicants are eligible to apply. The deadline for scholarship applicants for the 2023 year is MAY 1st for priority consideration, with rolling applications open until all scholarships are awarded. For more details about Scholarships, please visit our website at https://www.calrbs.org/scholarships/

IOBA Members

IOBA offers numerous scholarships each year so that our members can continue their education and professional development. Scholarships are awarded without regard to current level of accomplishment, financial need, full- or part-time bookseller status, or length of time in the book trade. IOBA is committed to the belief that every well-educated, well-informed, and ethical bookseller is a credit to the trade and to our organization, and we consider these scholarships to be our investment in the future of bookselling.

These scholarships are available to any current IOBA member in good standing, excluding members of the Scholarship Committee and current Officers. Prospective members who are currently participating in the mentorship program are also eligible to apply, if approved by their mentor.
