More about this bookseller
La Fenice Antiquaria is an antiquarian online bookshop based in Los Angeles, founded by Paola and Giovanni.
La Fenice takes its name and emblem from the mythological phoenix, a symbol of rebirth. The idea suits us: old books continually acquire new lives, meanings, and readers. The symbol feels personal too, connecting naturally with our own backgrounds and stories.
Paola trained academically in art history and the history of Western publishing before pursuing a career in marketing; Giovanni comes from the worlds of design and technology, with additional training in wine and the culinary arts. Both have continued their bibliographical studies through CABS-Minnesota and specialist courses in descriptive bibliography. The business grew out of years of collecting and a shared interest in books—perhaps, in its own way, another form of reinvention.
Art and illustrated editions, as well as wine and gastronomy, remain central to our catalogs. We are also particularly drawn to books that reveal how knowledge was made, illustrated, circulated, and put to use: natural history, travel, early science, and the occasional excursion into the occult or simply the wonderfully strange.
