Joseph Ennemoser was a German doctor and scientist, noted for his use of magnetism and hypnosis. He was a forerunner of Freud in his belief in the connection between the mind and physical health, and his interest in psychology led to investigations into the paranormal and magic. He became well known for his presentations about magic, delusions and apparently supernatural occurrences. He suggested that most of these phenomena appeared miraculous only because of a lack of understanding of the laws of nature. The History of Magic was published in Leipzig in 1844, and translated into English in 1854 by William Howitt, a leading Spiritualist writer. Volume 1 deals with the different categories of magic and mysticism, and how they were viewed in ancient times. He discusses visions, dreams and soothsaying, and miracles in the Bible, and the link between classical medicine and oracles. [Cambridge] The editor, his wife Mary, added a collection of supernatural and psychical occurrences, which illustrate the topics dealt with by Ennemoser. • The Crucifixion & the Eclipse : Follower of Maître d'Étienne Poncher - Cutting from Pontifical (1546

The Crucifixion & the Eclipse : Follower of Maître d'Étienne Poncher - Cutting from Pontifical (1546 PRICE £ 967 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Follower of the Maître d’Étienne Poncher- Cutting from a Pontifical (1546) France, 1546 (180 x 125 mm). Latin. Single leaf, cutting. 19 lines of script with characteristics of Gothic and Humanist. One 3-line decorated initial. Blue and red rubricated letters alternating. Ruled in pink. Illumination showing crucifixion of Christ; framed in architectural styling, with two putti holding a date (1546). Some surface damage from earlier mounting where paper has adhered to parchment. Pigment of 3-line initial has suffered flaking from mounting. Text: Performed liturgy of the Ordinary Mass from “Per omnia secula seculorum”; “Vere dignum” and the Sanctus / A beautiful illustration of the Crucifixion of Christ, suffering the misguided attempts of a (likely) Victorian admirer of the Medieval. The popular pastime of carefully cutting scenes from medieval manuscripts in the 19th century and reframing them for their own society’s ideas of beauty and importance has claimed many important works, including this one. This scene was cut from a Pontifical, illustrated in the style of the Maître d’Étienne Poncher (active 1490-1510), so called for his work on books for the Bishop of Paris, Étienne Poncher. The use of gold in this illustration performs in two ways: It highlights the holy— Jesus’ nimb, the halos of the three Marys, the frame of the scene. It also creates a dynamic and realistic quality to the wood of the cross and to the folds of the garments as well as adding shine to the stars in the sky and the sun. Time often stacks on top of itself in medieval illuminations, demonstrated here by the presence of the sun as well as the presence of the eclipsed (and unnaturally backwards) black crescent moon. Jesus’ wounds are bloodied at his stigmatae and at the hole punctured by the lance of Longinus. While the garments of the three Marys receive the more attention by the illustrator than their faces, it is the tiny face of Jesus that has received the most detail and the most painstakingly minute brush strokes to render his expression. Atop the cross has been nailed a plaque: INRI, Iesu Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum. The later Medieval play with depth of field is at work here, as we see the bare-trodden grassy ground and a blue background fading into the dark-eclipsed sky. • CONTEMPORARY BINDING

CONTEMPORARY BINDING < Back to Terminology List CONTEMPORARY BINDING Feature Also CONTEMPORANEOUS. A binding that was placed on the book at or near the time of publication though not by the publisher. Up until the 19th century (and continuing much later in some countries, like France), most books were published unbound, in plain paper covers or boards, and the purchaser would have the book bound to his taste by his bookbinder (often these bindings were designed to match other books in his library.) • Mentorship Program | Independent Online Booksellers Association

Booksellers seeking to join the Independent Online Booksellers Association go through our New Member Application process. In some cases, the Membership Committee decides that the applicant is fairly close to meeting the guidelines and requirements, but can use a little more work and guidance first. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Booksellers seeking to join the Independent Online Booksellers Association go through our New Member Application process. In some cases, the Membership Committee decides that the applicant is fairly close to meeting the guidelines and requirements, but can use a little more work and guidance first. Sometimes these booksellers are fairly new to the profession and are joining IOBA to learn more about the trade and to upgrade their standards, and in other cases they are already established but have been using listing methods and policies that need to be adjusted to fit the IOBA model. The most common area of concern is with bibliographic listings, grading, and policy statements. The following guidelines are from our New Member Application page. Our primary concern is for professional listings and high standards. This means full and accurate descriptions of the book in hand with all defects noted; conservative grading; and no blanket statements about condition or shipping speed or other repetitive boilerplate. We are looking for booksellers who want to create their own listings (or at least complete them) rather than relying solely on autofill “product information” that is provided for them, as that is often inaccurate and incomplete, and not very helpful when better books come along. Your bookselling business website returns policy must clearly state that customers may initiate a return, and that you will provide a full refund in that event. The IOBA Code of Ethics further stipulates that you will pay for return shipping costs if the item was misdescribed, and that the seller is responsible for items that are lost or damaged during shipping. The following factors are positives. Bibliographically correct descriptions; images available of books for sale; professional pricing; having your own website; specialization; good feedback; and anything that customers and fellow professional booksellers would find reassuring and admirable about your business. The following factors are negatives. Boilerplate language; poor condition descriptions (condition should match the grade you give, grading should be conservative, there should be a separate grade for the book and the dust jacket when there is one, and you should use professionally recognized condition definitions such as those listed on our website under Resources); missing bibliographic information (you should list the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, edition, printing/state, and number of pages; and you should note the presence of illustrations, maps, a bibliography, an index, etc.); stock images that are not noted as such; bizarre pricing on the high end; poor communications; poor feedback; and anything that customers and fellow professional booksellers would find suspicious or disturbing about your business. The following requirements are from our New Member Application page. A minimum of one year prior bookselling experience. Must be an owner/partner/member of an online bookselling business which is not a publicly traded corporation. Current, primary online business is selling books. Applicants must provide a business registration number of some sort (tax resale number, EIN, local business license, VAT, UTR, GST, etc.) in locations that require or provide same. A minimum online inventory of 200 books, at least 90% of which must be currently in stock. The range of pricing and the quality of your inventory should indicate your commitment to professionalism as a bookseller. Stated bookselling business website policy that customers may initiate a return, and that you will provide a full refund in that event. Policy of paying return shipping for misdescribed items, and policy of seller responsibility for items that are lost or damaged during shipping. Books are correctly described by author, title, place, publisher, date of publication, edition, binding type, etc., with all defects noted. Description must be about the specific book in hand. Membership is granted to only the business name applied for. Agrees to conduct business in accordance with the IOBA Code of Ethics. If you fall a bit short in some areas but are close to meeting the requirements, we have a Mentorship Program that may give you an opportunity to work with a professional member of IOBA toward the goal of reapplying. The Education Committee Chair may extend an invitation to join this program, based on the recommendation of the Membership Committee. If so, you will be matched up with a professional IOBA bookseller from a pool of volunteer mentors, and they will work with you on making improvements as needed. When the time is right, the mentor will suggest that you reapply, though there is no guarantee that the Membership Committee will accept your application the second time around because you were in our Mentorship Program. If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to ask by contacting the Education Committee Chair at educationinfo@ioba.org .

Lothar Meggendorfer's "Lebende Bilder" [Living Pictures] Eight Fantastic Hand Colored Moveable Plate PRICE $ 3500 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile [MOVABLE BOOK]. MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Lebende Bilder [Living Pictures] von L. Meggendorfer. 15. Auflage.München [Munich]: Verlag von Braun & Schneider, [ca. 1890]. Fifteenth German Edition. Folio (page size: 11 7/8 x 9 1/8 inches; 301 x 232 mm.; Board size: 12 7/8 x 9 3/8 inches; 327 x 238 mm.). [1, foreword], [2-18] pp. Eight hand-colored lithograph plates with movable parts (included in pagination), each with a tab to set the scene in motion. Original color lithographed pictorial boards with black cloth backstrip. Small rectangular booksellers label on rear turn-in (Brentano's New York). Inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired, all of the movable parts in perfect working order. Minimal rubbing to extremities of boards, still a spectacular copy of this rare title. According to OCLC the earliest edition that we can locate is 6. Auglage (ca. 1890) - there are very few copies of any of the original Braun & Schneider editions listed - we believe this 15th edition to have also been published around 1890. “Meggendorfer’s reputation today is based almost solely on his ingenious mechanical picture-books for children. These he began to design during the late 1880s, and many of these books went into multiple German editions besides translations into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Bohemian, Hungarian, and Russian. Deservedly, he is considered the creator and chief innovator of moveable toy books, and his printed works are eagerly sought after by collectors of historical children’s literature. He produced books with moveable figures, transformation pictures segmented into three parts and thus interchangeable, books with pop-up designs, rotating wheels as well as four-panel slat pictures which change the illustrations through movement, and simply funny picture books for children that would certainly make them laugh and generally contributed to some educational benefit” (Justin G. Schiller’s Introduction to The Publishing Archive of Lothar Meggendorfer. “There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s…the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer’s books—not to mention the originality of his figures—are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in Meggendorfer’s books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion” (Haining, Movable Books, p. 65). The Plates: 1. "Herr Staberl" (Mr. Staberl) 2. "Die Jungfer Köchin" (The Spinster Cook) 3. "Der Klavierpieler" (The Piano Player) 4. "Der Schreiber" (The Writer) 5. "Der Herr Magister" (The School Master) 6.
