First edition: Madame la Comtesse de Genlis (1746-1830) wrote 120 published works for a large audience in Europe. Genlis had extensive influence on women writers, read by Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Austen, Hannah More, and Frances Burney. An early feminist, Genlis campaigned for education, especially female education. Self-taught, Genlis was the first woman to be appointed "governor" to royal children including the future King of France.
