Thomas Armitage, 1779 • Three Volumes (I–IX) in Custom Fine Bindings by Frank Lawrence Embree, New York (c. 1901) Leather‑Bound Hardcovers • Gilt Edges • Gilt Dentelles • Frontispiece Illustrations
A beautifully executed three‑volume set of Laurence Sterne’s works, originally published by Thomas Armitage in 1779 and rebound circa 1901 by Frank Lawrence Embree, an unusually colorful and now scarcely documented New York binder. Embree’s work is seldom seen, and this set is a strong example of his turn‑of‑the‑century craftsmanship—English‑style fine bindings with American eccentricity.
Each book carries Embree’s gilt binder’s stamp on the front paste‑down, done in a style reminiscent of Sangorski & Sutcliffe. He also preserved the original rear paste‑down leaves, tipped in separately from the speckled paper he selected for this rebinding.
