[Broadside] Courtney-Morgan Co. in "A Fair Rebel." Monday Evening, Sept 5, 1898 PRICE $ 200 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Courtney-Morgan Co. Courtney-Morgan Co. in "A Fair Rebel." Monday Evening, Sept 5, 1898 . [MI?]: Courier Print, 1898. 10-3/4" x 5." Printed in black on the recto; verso blank. Minor soiling and age toning; trivial edgewear; some faint, salmon-colored discoloration on the verso that is faintly visible on the recto. A well-preserved broadside advertisement. "A Fair Rebel," a melodrama by Harry P. Mawson, was a remarkably popular play. It was loosely based on an actual 1864 escape from the Confederate Libby Prison in Richmond and follows a typical trope for the era, a romanticized depiction of love that crosses military and political lines. The play premiered on Broadway in 1891 and was performed around the country from the Midwest to the South throughout the 1890s. Its popularity extended into the 20th century with a 30-minute silent film version appearing in 1914. Here, the full Courtney-Morgan Co. cast of nearly 20 actors is printed along with synopses of each act. The Courtney-Morgan Co.—almost certainly managed by the two leads in the play, Courtenay Morgan and H. B. Morgan—is somewhat more elusive. While the broadside announcing the performance is dated, there is no location. This elusiveness is compounded by a sufficiently generic imprint: "The Courier Print." We have identified the Courtney-Morgan Co. as having been active in Cheboygan, MI in the spring of 1898 performing a half dozen plays including a promise to replay the bombardment of Havana Harbor and the blowing up of the Maine—a piece of news that was scarcely a few weeks old! And incidentally, a performance that did not come off without injury to one among the cast! The few additional mentions of the company in newspapers of this era (and as late as 1908) find them exclusively in Michigan: Cheboygan; Osceola County; Marquette; etc. suggesting that the Courtney-Morgan Co. was likely a Michigan acting company. On a related note, we find an advertisement for a performance of "A Fair Rebel" at the Ann Arbor Grand Opera House the week after the Cheboygan performances. While no acting company is noted in the advertisement for this Ann Arbor performance, it is possible the Courtney-Morgan Co. was the performing troupe. All of this suggests that this broadside is likely for a Michigan performance. A rare, unrecorded broadside of a little remembered acting troupe. Ridge, Patricia Lin. History of the Cheboygan Opera House, Cheboygan, Michigan from 1891-1920 . p. 29-30. PURCHASE / MORE INFO More items from Michael Pyron, Bookseller [Broadside] Courtney-Morgan Co. in "A Fair Rebel." - The Remarkable Rooming-House of Mme. Le Monde
The Remarkable Rooming-House of Mme. Le Monde PRICE $ 125.00 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile This short play may be viewed as grotesque and horrific. The four, unsympathetic characters wade through sadomasochistic relationships of psychological torture and manipulation, plus the sexual and other physical abuse of a physically disabled person. In the context of the many miserable and brutal characters of Tennessee Williams' previous plays, this may be the culminating expression of Williams' thinking. Tennessee Williams did not publish this in his lifetime, possibly because it was too hot for the trade press to touch, but through his agent he arranged to have Albondocani Press publish a limited, fine press edition. Williams died before this took place and the edition was published posthumously by his estate. This play remains outside of Williams' usual cannon and is performed on stage only sporadically and seldom. This is copy 120 of a limited edition of 150 numbered copies. This Small 8vo book is 8" x 6 1/2", unpaginated, and 36 pages. Set in Palatino types and printed on Antique Laid paper. Sewn into Swedish, marbled, French-flapped wraps over stiff black wraps. Printed and bound by Nancy King and William Ferguson, founder of both Metacom Press and Halty Ferguson Publishing. The press' single-leaf prospectus is laid in. - Patricio Tricasso's "Epitoma chyromantico," 1535 treatise on palmistry, with 78 woodcuts
Patricio Tricasso's "Epitoma chyromantico," 1535 treatise on palmistry, with 78 woodcuts PRICE $ 3,000 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Title: Trichassio Da Cerasari Mantouano [Mantovano] Epitoma chyromantico ... Description: Patricio Tricasso's "Epitoma chyromantico," a treatise on palmistry, complete with 78 woodcut illustrations of palms. Though the book bears no publication date, the dedication date of 1535 points to this being a rare copy of the first edition. The more common second edition bears a 1538 imprint and is usually seen with a misprint of 1635 in the dedication. There is a variant edition, also with a 1535 dedication, that has "Vineggia" rather than "Vinegia" on the title page, different woodcut initials, and other differences in type; priority between the two variants cannot be established. In Italian, printed in italic type. Woodcut portrait, initials, and 78 three-quarter page palm illustrations. Bound in full parchment over boards with title and date in manuscript on the spine and text edges sprinkled red. Octavo; 128, [8] leaves; A-R^8; 6 x 4 inches. Signature of former owner Giovanne Georgio de Metzburg on the title page. Bookplate of former owner Harrison Gray Otis, 3rd (1822-1884), originally of Boston, Massachusetts, at Chateau de Spiez in Berne, Switzerland on September 20, 1875. Otis is known for being the grandson of Harrison Gray Otis, a prominent leader of the Federalist Party, and for fighting a duel in 1844 with James Schott, Jr. The binding moderately soiled with chips and tears to the parchment on the spine, but structurally sound; dampstaining of the rear endpaper and repair to the title page, but the interior generally clean. Very Good. Patricio Tricasso (1491-circa 1550) was a Dominican astrologer and palmist, born in Cerasara, Mantua, Italy. He studied under the physiognomist and palmist Bartolommeo dell Rocca, also known as Cocles, with whom he later developed intense disagreements. "Epitoma chyomantico" is an important work on palmistry (also known as chiromancy or chirology), placed on the Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books (Index Librorum Prohibitorum), along with other works on divination. It discusses the principles of palmistry and how to identify letters and shapes in the lines of the palm. With 78 illustrations of palms, the "Epitoma chyromantico" is more extensive than Tricasso's earlier works on palmistry, including his 1522 "Chiromantia" with 48 illustrations and his 1525 "Super chyromantiam Coclytis" with four illustrations. Worldcat shows a total of seven institutional holdings with presumed publication date of 1535. Bibliographical reference sources refer only to the more common 1538 edition. Not in EDIT 16, USTC, Caillet, Sabbattini, or Sander.
