  • Making the Past Speak: The Speaking Picture Book (1890s)

Making the Past Speak: The Speaking Picture Book (1890s) PRICE £ 766 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile The Speaking Picture Book: A new Picture Book with Characteristically Voices . London: H. Gravel & Co. Made in Germany. Ca. 1890s (300 x 230 x 60mm) 8 illustrations of animals with facing page poetry + title page + informative pastedown. Red cloth binding with stamped edge decoration; chromolithograph plate as cover image with title, text, and vignette of mother playing with children and pets. The 8 card boar pages sit on top of the speaking mechanism, housed in a gilt wooden box with ornate sound vents. 9 tabs with red wooden beads produce 9 voices. Scuffing to cover illustration. Smudges throughout. Historic tape-based repair to the Donkey has left the page stiff. An historic child has drawn lines in purple crayon to Mama and Papa. Bumping to corners. Rebacked. Strings and tabs not original, but an early intervention. The bellows are original, some of the strings are original with indication of historic (early 20th c.) replacements. All sounds function. The fact this toy, manufactured in Nuremberg, has survived— with the evidence of a real-life kid playing with it through the crayon doodles on the final page— is amazing. It has been repaired over the course of its 120 year lifespan, and you can almost see the diligent parent, unscrewing the back page to reveal the inner workings and bellows, trying to fix an over-loved sound that has been pulled too hard and too frequently. Each of the 8 pages with accompanying poetry has an arrow pointing to the tab to be pulled to produce the sound of the cock, donkey, lamb, birds, cow, cuckoo, goat, Mama, and Papa. The patent for this sound-producing book was registered in Germany in 1878 and a year later in England. The book was very popular, with translations from German into French, Spanish, and English, but few survive and even fewer with all the sounds working. The box housing the bellows mechanism is a delicate wood with the sound vents easily punched out. The bellows are made of paper and straws, pulled by strings. The book was intended for children— notorious destroyers of the fragile. None of the examples housed in the British Library and two Cambridge libraries are completely functional. The illustration on the cover shows an sweet scene of a Victorian, lace-frilled mama surrounded by her three children, cat and dog, all of whom have cast aside a copy of the Strewwelpeter (a nod at the German origin of the book’s technology) and a puppet; they are enraptured by the the Speaking Book, which is pictured on its own cover. Captivate your kids with German technology! • MUSTY / MUSTINESS

MUSTY / MUSTINESS < Back to Terminology List MUSTY / MUSTINESS Defect A book's adhesives, inks, and paper may be made of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can decompose over time. A humid or damp environment can accelerate this process and rusted binding staples are often an indicator of such an environment. During decomposition, the VOCs are released into the air and create the distinctive odor we identify as musty. This odor is a complex composition and may reflect the ways the book was used or stored. A slight mustiness may be acceptable, but excessively musty books are usually unfit for commerce. Previous Next

  • [Artist's Book] Goodale, Rebecca and Carrie Scanga. Penumbra

[Artist's Book] Goodale, Rebecca and Carrie Scanga. Penumbra PRICE $ 1500 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile [Artist's Book] Goodale, Rebecca and Carrie Scanga. Penumbra . Freeport and Portland, ME: Rebecca Goodale and Carrie Scanga, 2025. Accordion. 8" x 5," closed. [16] pp., illus. Limited edition, numbered 5 of 9 variants. Signed by Goodale and Scanga at the colophon. An innovative structure, this accordion book made up of intaglio prints with hand-coloring in silver ink is sewn into the illustrated wrappers in two places. Variants numbered 1-5 comprise the deluxe edition in full cloth, lidded box with striking print recessed into the lid. Copies 6-9 are without box—inquire for pricing. Intaglio-printed prospectus with hand-coloring is laid in. A beautiful and moody collaboration between Goodale and Scanga; their fourth. This book is a product of their individual memories of and reflections upon the solar eclipse in April 2024, Goodale watching from the beach in Maine and Scanga from the woods. These sixteen interlocking pages expand from a paper cover bringing the reader into a surreal garden of dwindling light. Not attempting to be a strict representation of their experiences witnessing the totality, it is instead a wonderful blend of memory and fantasy relaying the remembered emotion. A striking scene in blues and shadows accented in silver ink applied by hand. While the edition was printed from the same plates, the hand-coloring and even the variation in color and saturation from copy to copy mean no two are exactly alike. The structure of the binding and the manner in which these leaves connect offer a more complicated experience than a typical accordion book, with some pages interlocking mid-leaf there is something always just out of view contributing to the mystery and wonder. $1500 PURCHASE / MORE INFO More items from Michael Pyron, Bookseller [Broadside] Courtney-Morgan Co. in "A Fair Rebel."
