- TAPE RESIDUE / TAPE STAIN
TAPE RESIDUE / TAPE STAIN < Back to Terminology List TAPE RESIDUE / TAPE STAIN Defect Complications of adhesive-backed tape that remain on pages or covers of a book, resulting in staining or remnants of adhesive or tape adhering to the surface. The first image shows a dust jacket stained from the adhesive of tape that deteriorated and fell off. The dust jacket flap was also stained from the remaining adhesive contacted it. The second image shows staining from tape that was removed from a book's endpaper. The surface tear of the endpaper is evidence that the tape was still well-adhered when removed. The third image shows staining where tape was used to retain a jacket protector. The adjacent smudges are likely from an ill-advised attempt to remove the stain. A remnant of tape is still attached to the jacket. Previous Next
- Scholarships | Independent Online Booksellers Association
IOBA offers several scholarships each year so members can continue their education and professional development. Scholarships are awarded without regard to current level of accomplishment, financial need, full- or part-time bookseller status, or length of time in the book trade. IOBA SCHOLARSHIPS General Information IOBA offers several scholarships each year so members can continue their education and professional development. Scholarships are awarded without regard to current level of accomplishment, financial need, full- or part-time bookseller status, or length of time in the book trade. IOBA is committed to the belief that every well-educated, well-informed, and ethical bookseller is a credit to the trade and to our organization, and we consider these scholarships to be our investment in the future of bookselling. These scholarships are available to any current IOBA member in good standing, excluding members of the Scholarship Committee and current Officers. Prospective members who are currently participating in the mentorship program are also eligible to apply, if approved by their mentor. Three scholarship is specifically reserved for CABS-Minnesota. . CABS-Minnesota is an intensive program on all aspects of bookselling, now held on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, USA for one week each summer. IOBA also provides open scholarships that can be used at the following institutions: York Antiquarian Book Seminar (YABS), held in York, England. YABS is a three-day intensive seminar modeled after CABS but tailored for booksellers in the UK. Rare Book School (RBS, Charlottesville, VA, USA). RBS courses focus on specific aspects of book history, bibliography, printing and book arts. Most of these week-long courses are offered in the summer in Charlottesville, but others are offered at other venues around the East Coast and at other times of the year. California Rare Book School (CALRBS, various locations in CA, USA). CALRBS courses are also similarly focused and are week-long courses covering a broad range of topics, from the history, identification and preservation of motion picture materials to the history of typography. London Rare Books School (LRBS). Two week-long intensive sessions on specific topics about antiquarian material are offered each summer at the University of London, England. Courses have included A History of Maps and Mapping, The Medieval Book, and Children’s Books. Each Scholarship covers tuition and required expenses. The CABS and YABS scholarships must be used in the year in which they are awarded. In order to allow time for the LRBS, RBS and CALRBS admissions process, a scholarship awarded to one of these schools is valid until December 31 of the year following the one in which the scholarship is awarded. APPLY NOW Additional questions should be addressed to: scholarshipcontest@ioba.org . Best of luck to all! TESTIMONIALS Members that received scholarships last year offered these words about their experiences: Greg Hughes , Hughes Rare Books "I had heard from many booksellers that CABS is a transformative experience, and after attending, I understand why. The coursework gave me a valuable chance to calibrate my own approach and expose neglected aspects of my business. Beyond that, spending a week with booksellers from across the trade gave me a much stronger sense of belonging to a professional community. I came away not only with a clearer sense of my business, but also of my place within the community."
- Marriage of Ludwig Gutmann and Rosette Pinkus: manuscript with 8 watercolours
Marriage of Ludwig Gutmann and Rosette Pinkus: manuscript with 8 watercolours PRICE € 750 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Ludwig & Rosettchen. Eine Wundersame Historie. Gedruckt in dies Jahr. [Berlin], [1895-1896]. Calligraphic manuscript in German. [17] ll. Text on versos only. Title-page in ink and watercolour (mimicking a printed title-page, signed “N. Bergmann”), 2 full-page, and 5 vignettes, initials and headpieces in ink and watercolour. In original decorated red cloth, the front board titled “Ludwig und Rosettchen”. Most leaves loose (formerly glued together, the glue still visible on some leaves), the binding slightly damaged along the edges, neatly rebacked. This exquisite calligraphic manuscript features rhyming verses adorned with stunning watercolour illustrations, commemorating the marriage of Ludwig Gutmann (1859-?) and Rosette Pinkus (or Pincus, Berlin 1872-1918). Both individuals hailed from Jewish heritage, with Rosette being the daughter of Moses and Lina Pinkus (née Arndt). The manuscript references Rosette's parents and her brother, Adolf Pinkus. One illustration, titled "September 1896 ein Bild ohne Worte", shows a woman and child. Possibly this portrays Rosette with her daughter Erna Gutmann (later known as Erna Marcus), born in Berlin on June (or September?) 14, 1896. Erna's later emigration to the United States , as a means of fleeing Nazi oppression , adds a significant historical layer to this manuscript. She died in 1973 and rests in the Cedar Park and Beth El Cemeteries in New York . Rosette and Ludwig had another daughter, Grethe , born on July 20, 1899, who is not mentioned in the text. Grethe married Albert Goetz . In 1939, the couple fled Nazi Germany to Amsterdam , where they lived at Zuider Amstellaan 177 III . On January 9, 1943, they were arrested and taken to Camp Westerbork, from where they were transported to Auschwitz on February 16, 1943. Three days later, they were murdered. Possibly, Grethe took the present manuscript with her to Amsterdam. This manuscript not only carries sentimental significance but also acts as a tangible link to Jewish life in pre-World War I Germany, chronicling personal and familial milestones amid significant historical transformations. The artwork, poetic verses, and intricate watercolours likely encapsulate the joy and hope surrounding the marriage and the birth of Erna. The manuscript is part of a much larger story about the Jewish diaspora, displacement, persecution and survival. HISTORY IOBA was founded in 1999 by a group of concerned online booksellers. When the internet began to take on a life of its own around this time, and several pioneer used/out-of-print/antiquarian book search services opened their electronic doors for business, the booksellers who were really their partners in this new venture were thrilled with the results, as were our customers. Even at this early date, however, it became obvious that we needed to reconcile the wonderful efficiency and relative anonymity of online selling with the importance of maintaining traditional values. Forming a trade association gave us an opportunity to address the key issues of establishing trust between bookseller and book buyer, helping to train future generations of new booksellers, advocating for our members, and acting as a clearinghouse for information.
