  • Pancoast, Operative Surgery, 1844

Pancoast, Operative Surgery, 1844 PRICE $1850.00 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile A Treatise on Operative Surgery; Comprising a Description of the Various Processes of the Art, Including All the New Operations. By Joseph Pancoast. 1844. Tall quarto/small folio volume (approx 12 x 10 x 1 3/4 inches) with new marble boards and leather spine. New end papers. 80 elaborate plates of surgical operations, also advertisements at front and end matter. Includes prospectus and sample plate for a forthcoming title on midwifery. Text pages mostly bright. Some foxing and frequent browning of page edges. This title is somewhat notorious for the plates browning and foxing, and this copy is no different (see photos) with some plates brighter than others. 19th century owners signature inside. Binding is tight. Topics in this book include bloodletting, amputations, mandibular resection, ophthalmology, etc etc. The name of Pancoast is immortalized in the Pancoast tumor (involvement of the brachial plexus by direct extension of malignant neoplasia of the upper lobe of the lung). This work was an instant success, a standard in its field, and remains highly praised and sought after! A very good and complete copy, recently rebound in period-style quarter leather binding, by Vernon Wiering. This work contains the first extensive section on plastic surgery in an American surgical text (see Garrison-Morton 5598). Many from private collections, and many rescued from library book sales. It all started around 1990 with FUNGUS THE BOGEYMAN, really, the day we went to check it out and the copy had been stolen. We discovered that books could be found and purchased worldwide and the rest is history. Here at The M.A.D. House Artists we have more books NOT listed than listed, but we are working on reversing that. Feel free to ask. We are more than happy to search the shelves. Our collection started with our own books, parents' books, grandparents' books and has grown for the past thirty years into an online book store. It is our conviction that there are simply no books worth sending to the recycling, so our offerings range widely from the rare and perfect collectable volume to the acceptable well-read copy, in the hope that the words printed will not be lost. Dennis enjoys the shopping. Candace does most everything else. We are interested in everything, and our collection reflects the description given us by our son, The Grand Lake Artistic Chaos Foundation. 1/1 1/1 1/1 1/1 Featured Items Terms of Sale Paypal preferrred. Personal checks will delay the shipping until the check clears our bank, about a week. We charge tax in Oklahoma. Refunds cheerfully given upon return of merchandise. We try to carefully describe each and every book and provide an image. Sometimes things are destroyed in the mail, or we goof. Please contact us right away if there is any problem. We aim to please.

  • Network at Fifty, by Norman Corwin. Two trial copies designed & printed by Ward Richie

Network at Fifty, by Norman Corwin. Two trial copies designed & printed by Ward Richie PRICE $ 200.00 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile A wide-ranging, sometimes surreal poem of human activity, our place in the universe, the future, and the Cyclops that translates it all for humanity. "Cyclops" is a metaphor for the "eye" logo of CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System, and the poem was written for the 50th anniversary of the company. An excerpt of a televised walk in space and a walk on the moon: "No eye has roved like the video eye / Away and beyond the reach of earth / Out to the moon and onto it / Footprints in the primordial dust, umbilical walks in the deeps of space, / Sprayed on the tube in front of the chair or up on the wall in the bedroom." TWO COPIES of the book , both having the foreword by Robert Nathan, and both printed on loose leaves, folded once. Copy One is complete with all leaves tucked, unbound, into cream, brown, and blue French-flapped Cockerell and Son marbled paper wraps. A paper CBS “eye” logo label is applied to the front. 18 pp. Copy Two has no wraps, is marked "trials" in pencil at the head of the title page, unbound, and is partial, having 4 pages of the 7-page poem. Pagination is different from the complete copy, with the title page being a self-wrap. 12 pp. Both copies were obtained together, neither is signed, and are possibly trials or proofs for the author or printer. From a limited edition of 50, commissioned by the Invierno Press, and printed by the great designer and printer Ward Richie under his imprint Laguna Verde Imprenta. Richie had retired from commercial printing and design at The Ward Ritchie Press, so he and his wife Marka moved to their summer house. Since he had retired, Richie, of course, had an 1835 Albion hand press moved into their house and began printing this and other books for his own pleasure. Although not stated, the book's design is by Richie with the title page's 3-color illustration in a style reminiscent of other title pages designed by him. At once these are poetry, an oblique tribute to broadcasting history, and examples of Ward Richie's fine printing and design. Both are clean, sharp, and in Fine Condition.
