- A Chinese physician accidentally ending up in Amsterdam in 1861
A Chinese physician accidentally ending up in Amsterdam in 1861 PRICE € 3750 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile [A photographic portrait of Chinese medical doctor Lau Noni, or Liu Noni sinsiang (劉奴年先生)]. [Amsterdam or Leiden?], 1861. Oval albumen print (26,3 x 20,2 cm), mounted on card (42 x 32,1 cm). At the back the sitter is identified in pen: “Lau Noni / v. Soa tau, an̄. 26. / 1861”. And in Chinese Characters (an autograph signature?): 劉 / 奴 / 年. Some typical fading and highlight yellowing, otherwise in very good condition. An impressive and large albumen print showing Chinese medical doctor Liu Noni, who visited the Netherlands in 1861. Noni’s visit to Holland was the result of an interesting turn of events. He had served as a doctor on a ship to Cuba, presumably in late 1860. However, after his arrival in Havana, he failed to find a ship back to China. He was making a living selling dried fruit when he happened to meet a Dutch captain who invited him to join his ship to The Netherlands. Working on the ship as a steward, Noni arrived in Amsterdam in April 1861 , where he stayed for over six months. He was the first Chinese visitor to the Netherlands in 30 years, and news of his arrival spread quickly. The Leiden scholar Johann Joseph Hoffmann (1805-1878) , who studied Japanese and Chinese, was keen to meet him. Interestingly, Hoffmann did not speak Chinese , but could write it. When the two met in Leiden, Hoffmann wrote down a Chinese greeting, whereupon Noni, who had been unable to communicate in Chinese for months, nearly cried with joy. Two of Hoffmann’s students later accompanied Noni on a ship to Batavia, from where he embarked for China. Noni's visit was reported in several Dutch newspapers. The most extensive article was by the popular writer Pieter Harmen Witkamp, who met Noni briefly and wrote about him in the Nederlandsch Magazijn . Witkamp's article is still the most comprehensive source about Noni's visit to the Netherlands. The present photograph was most likely taken in Amsterdam or Leiden. It appears to be listed in Frederik Muller's 1882 sales catalogue Les Indes Orientales under number 3398. Muller notes "avec signature autogr., en Chinois", which suggests that Noni's name in Chinese characters is indeed an autograph. Number 3399 in Muller's catalogue is the same photograph, but reduced in size. It is possible that the present photograph is the only surviving image of Noni. - 1717 Red-Ruled First Edition John Baskett Vinegar Bible
1717 Red-Ruled First Edition John Baskett Vinegar Bible PRICE 14975 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. The famous and monumental “Vinegar Bible” also known as the “Baskett full of errors,” and generally acknowledged as the most magnificent Bible printed in England. The text is the King James Version of the English Bible and was printed in large folio by John Baskett at Oxford in 1717-16. The volume is adorned with numerous beautifully engraved head and tailpieces depicting scenes from the Bible (about 60 in total, about 1/4 of a page each), further adorned with engraved initials. Includes the famous typographical error in the headline of Luke XX that reads “The Parable of the Vinegar.” Collation: (*)2, *2, a-b2, c1, A-Z^6, Aa-Zz^6, Aaa-Zzz^6, Aaaa-Pppp^6, Qqqq^4, (Old Testament) [A]-[X]^6, Y^4 (New Testament). Complete. Comprises the complete text of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament, along with the two title pages and the preliminaries. Both titles display beautiful engravings, with the general title showing a particularly fine view of Oxford. Bound in polished black calf with elaborate gilt tooled border design. Gilt fillet rolls and central gilt lozenge on covers. Spine with six raised bands and extensive gilt tooled compartments. A red gilt tooled label with the words “Holy Bible”. Plain endpapers. Herbert (942) calls it "A magnificent edition, printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books, engraved in steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved ... " This edition is the more elaborately illustrated 'A' variant with Two general titles, the first one - engraved by Du-Bose- represents Moses writing the first words of Genesis. Famously, John Baskett set out to print the most beautiful, largest, and finest illustrated Bible ever printed, and he largely achieved his vision with this masterpiece of typography and illustration, printed in 1717 (Old Testament and Apocrypha) and 1716 (New Testament). Harry Carter, the historian of Oxford printing, states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression, and paper." Equally famously, however, the glory of the typography was not matched by the accuracy of the proofreading, and the text is filled errors. The most famous of these errors was the misprint in the headline of Luke XX, which ought to have read “The Parable of the Vineyard.” Instead, the text reads “The Parable of the Vinegar.” As a result, this edition of the Bible has, since its first appearance, been known as the “Vinegar Bible.” The bounteous nature of the edition’s misprints has also led to its appellation as the “Baskett full of errors” (playing upon the printer’s name). Overall Condition is VERY GOOD PLUS. Infrequent foxing, mostly to margins. Some browned leaves on occasion. Qq5 small ½” piece loss to margin. Bbb3 with 3” closed tear to tail impacting a few letters. [g]6 with 1” taped tear to head. [s]1 with 1” small tear to margin at tail. MIMEOGRAPH / MIMEO < Back to Terminology List MIMEOGRAPH / MIMEO General A mimeograph, abbreviated mimeo, is a paper copy created by a duplicating machine that forces ink through a stencil and onto the sheet. The stencils could be typed on a typewriter or hand cut. Generally used for printing in small quantity, the process is mimeography and the resulting copies do not have archival properties. The first example image is from a 1941 school handbook mimeographed by students. The second example is from a 1955 "zine," with stencils made by the author. Previous Next

The Appendix with material selected by Mary Howitt covers Apparitions, Dreams, Second Sight, Somnambulism, Predictions, Divination, Witchcraft; Vampires, Fairies, Table Turning, and Spirit-Rapping. Joseph Ennemoser was a German doctor and scientist, noted for his use of magnetism and hypnosis. He was a forerunner of Freud in his belief in the connection between the mind and physical health, and his interest in psychology led to investigations into the paranormal and magic. He became well known for his presentations about magic, delusions and apparently supernatural occurrences. He suggested that most of these phenomena appeared miraculous only because of a lack of understanding of the laws of nature. The History of Magic was published in Leipzig in 1844, and translated into English in 1854 by William Howitt, a leading Spiritualist writer. Volume 1 deals with the different categories of magic and mysticism, and how they were viewed in ancient times. He discusses visions, dreams and soothsaying, and miracles in the Bible, and the link between classical medicine and oracles. [Cambridge] The editor, his wife Mary, added a collection of supernatural and psychical occurrences, which illustrate the topics dealt with by Ennemoser. - The Crucifixion & the Eclipse : Follower of Maître d'Étienne Poncher - Cutting from Pontifical (1546
The Crucifixion & the Eclipse : Follower of Maître d'Étienne Poncher - Cutting from Pontifical (1546 PRICE £ 967 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Follower of the Maître d’Étienne Poncher- Cutting from a Pontifical (1546) France, 1546 (180 x 125 mm). Latin. Single leaf, cutting. 19 lines of script with characteristics of Gothic and Humanist. One 3-line decorated initial. Blue and red rubricated letters alternating. Ruled in pink. Illumination showing crucifixion of Christ; framed in architectural styling, with two putti holding a date (1546). Some surface damage from earlier mounting where paper has adhered to parchment. Pigment of 3-line initial has suffered flaking from mounting. Text: Performed liturgy of the Ordinary Mass from “Per omnia secula seculorum”; “Vere dignum” and the Sanctus / A beautiful illustration of the Crucifixion of Christ, suffering the misguided attempts of a (likely) Victorian admirer of the Medieval. The popular pastime of carefully cutting scenes from medieval manuscripts in the 19th century and reframing them for their own society’s ideas of beauty and importance has claimed many important works, including this one. This scene was cut from a Pontifical, illustrated in the style of the Maître d’Étienne Poncher (active 1490-1510), so called for his work on books for the Bishop of Paris, Étienne Poncher. The use of gold in this illustration performs in two ways: It highlights the holy— Jesus’ nimb, the halos of the three Marys, the frame of the scene. It also creates a dynamic and realistic quality to the wood of the cross and to the folds of the garments as well as adding shine to the stars in the sky and the sun. Time often stacks on top of itself in medieval illuminations, demonstrated here by the presence of the sun as well as the presence of the eclipsed (and unnaturally backwards) black crescent moon. Jesus’ wounds are bloodied at his stigmatae and at the hole punctured by the lance of Longinus. While the garments of the three Marys receive the more attention by the illustrator than their faces, it is the tiny face of Jesus that has received the most detail and the most painstakingly minute brush strokes to render his expression. Atop the cross has been nailed a plaque: INRI, Iesu Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum. The later Medieval play with depth of field is at work here, as we see the bare-trodden grassy ground and a blue background fading into the dark-eclipsed sky.
