An account of John Elliot Wards (1814-1902) mission to ratify the American portion of the Treaty of Tientsin which failed due to inopportune timing (Ward arrived just after the British had attacked the Taku forts) and his refusal to kowtow. In this brief narrative, two objects have been kept in view: One has been to describe the reception and proceedings of the American Embassy in its journey to the Chinese capital; the other to exhibit, more particularly, than would have been necessary had the Ambassador seen the Emperor, the discussions held with the Commissioners upon the ceremony required at the Chinese Court to show the views which it now entertains. Appears unread, with micro-chips , creases to extremities typical of pulp fiction paperbacks of this age, pages are clean, bright and binding tight. Overall a about fine copy. Scarce signature on the copyright page of The Quaking Widow by author Robert Colby. This is the first novel by author Robert Colby and considered one of his best. Colby wrote at least 17 novels and numerous short stories including Ace Doubles; In a Vanishing Room, Kill Me a Fortune, Murder Mistress, Gold Medal books; The Captain Must Die, The Deadly Desire, Secret of the Second Door, The Star Trap. Colby was a regular contributor to Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine from the 1960s-1980s. Bound with the novel The Deep End by Owen Dudley who also went by the names Dudley Dean and Dean Owen, he was a prolific author who began writing dime novel westerns in the 1930s for pulp magazines; Cowboy Stories, Thrilling Western, Ranch Romances, Action Stories, Complete Western Book and many more pulp magazines of the day. He wrote in several genres including crime noir, detective fiction and adult soft core "sleaze" fiction under the name Dean McCoy, many books were published for Beacon Books including Sexbound and The Friendship Club. Signed on the ffep with the last letter of his name written as é instead of y which he seldom did.His very first novel about an American diplomat in love with a gypsy and about the violence and danger of the bull ring. Hewrote the second novel, a classic 1952 book titled "Matador" which John Steinbeck said was the best book written that year. His night club in San Francisco, El Matador, hosted many famous celebrities and he was friends with Ernest Hemingway. He is the only American to battle bulls in all three countries of Spain, Mexico and Peru. Newspaper clipping of provenance included. Beautiful GGA cover art. Banded spine with gilt titles. Beautiful red, blue, white and gold intricately marbled endpapers Henry Steel Olcott 1832-1907 was a Buddhist occultist and a co-founder of the Theosophical Society. Olcott had been interested in Spiritualism, and in 1874 he became aware of the seances of the Eddy Brothers of Chittenden, Vermont. His interest aroused, Olcott wrote an article for the New York Sun, in which he investigated Eddy Farms. His article was popular enough that other papers, such as the New York Daily Graphic, republished it. His 1874 publication People from the Other World began with his early articles concerning the Spiritualist movement. Part 1 of this work is a careful account of Olcott's 1874 investigations into the famous Eddy brothers of Chittenden, Vermont, and their claimed psychic powers. Part 2 is a report into two Philadelphia mediums who claimed to be able to call up two spirits called John and Katie King. The account includes descriptions of seances, healings, levitation, teleportation and the famous Compton transfiguration. Also, in 1874, Olcott met Helena Blavatsky while both were visiting the Eddy farm. His foundational interest in the Spiritualist movement and his budding relationship with Blavatsky helped foster his development of spiritual philosophy. People from the Other World offers an important insight into the nineteenth-century fascination with the occult and is a classic example of a Victorian attempt to approach the supernatural with the rigors of scientific investigation. Condition: Wear to all board edges and corners. Gilt titles show light scuffing and nicks but still has a lovely glow. The hinges and binding are strong and firm. The binding is square and solid.
