- "Go and enjoy yourself!": Sex tourism in Paris
"Go and enjoy yourself!": Sex tourism in Paris PRICE € 750 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Vient de paraitre. Le guide secret pour étrangers et viveurs. Secret Directory for foreigner Bachelors in Paris. Zum amusieren der Jungersellern[!]. Casas nocturnas. (Colophon: Paris, Éditions Lagache, [early 20th century?]). 14 x 10 cm. 3-31, [1] pp. Stapled illustrated self-wrappers, without title-page, presumably as issued (counting the front wrapper as pages 1-2). Very well-preserved. An apparently unrecorded edition of a guide for sex tourism in Paris; in French with English and German translations (despite the text on the wrapper, it doesn’t include Spanish). The quality of the translations is reminiscent of early 2010s Google Translate (or worse: the word “Junggeselle” is misspelt “Jungersellern” on the wrapper), but they no doubt served their purpose. For those seeking sexual pleasures in Paris, Montmartre was apparently the best place to look: "Why? The answer is simple. One only needs to look at the army of girls trying to fascinate men of all conditions for a good time together. It is almost impossible to pass by and resist, and why should you resist? Go and enjoy yourself!" The text mentions cabaret Bruant, "fondé en 1895", indicating that it must have been published in or after that year. The guide includes a publisher’s catalogue listing several other "ouvrages amusants", including a potentially useful work devoted to "Les 32 vraies positions" and, surprisingly, the present guide. The last page features an (imagined?) ex-libris of Alfred de Musset, showing two lesbian couples embracing and kissing. Sex tourism boomed in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, prompting the publication of many guides to aid tourists. The present guide exists in several editions, all of which are extremely rare. Cf. Journal général de l'imprimerie et de la librairie (1897), p. 1280 (other ed.); Gonzalez, When Paris was the Whorehouse of Europe . Bize güvenen yanilmayacaktir! Maarif Vekilligi tarafindan aylik olarak nesredilir. No: 1-20. June 19, 1939-1940. OKUL-SPOR [i.e. SCHOOL-SPORT]. Maarif Vekâleti [i.e. Turkish Ministry of Education]., Ankara, 1939-1940. Paperback. Folio. (34 x 25 cm). In Turkish. Each issue [15] p. 20 issues: (315 p.), profusely b/w ills. According to the Turkish National Library, the complete set has 20 issues. From 1939 to 1940, 20 issues published in Ankara and it's all published. This magazine which is published between 1939-1949 is a particular interest as it is a primary source that has not yet been studied in-depth and because it contains articles by Republican State (no named authors) time and is illustrated by a great number of photographs. The carefully selected symbols and discourse on the sports subject used in the magazine for self-representation as a search for international legitimacy on the part of the new Republican leadership. This search for legitimacy was based on the visual and textual representation of the Republic as something that was completely new and different and was contemporary to its time. Every issue has a specific cover illustration that shows and reflects the New Republican's modernity understanding of 'the sports subject' like Turkish young girls and women who sport with Turkish flags in their hands, young men who have perfect bodies, and other representations of the new republican modernism. There's no owner and author detail in periodical's editorial board. A new understanding of society is attempted to be imposed on readers through the idea of sportive discipline. Some articles have praises for the Italian fascist regime and Nazi Germany's educational system and discipline. This point indicates the new regime's hesitant search for direction before and during the World War 2. 'Okul-Spor''s approach of propaganda influenced mostly by Soviet culture of its time. The magazine adapted the Soviet communist style of propaganda in a distinctive way and used it in order to further newly emerged Republican Turkish culture trying to find its own identity. Extremely rare and very important set. Complete. All published. Turkish National Library 000156195.; Not in OCLC as an institutional copy of set in American or European libraries. - Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book
Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book PRICE $595 AUD PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Maclurcan, H. [ Hannah 1860-1936] Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book: a collection of practical recipes specially suitable for Australia - 8th Edition revised & enlarged. Melbourne: George Robertson & Co, 1908 (printed by Butler & Tanner, The Selwood Printing Works, Frome & London) 8vo (185x135mm) Hardcover Quarter Bound Beige Cloth, professionally rebacked cloth spine, black lettered boards [vi],482,[2]pp. Possibly lacks front & rear free endpapers (?); small tear (no loss of text) to preface p [v]; front advert toned; boards lightly stained, worn & rubbed, cnrs rounded; edges spotted; very occassional spotting to text, some pencil notations. A solid, complete clean copy of a scarce text. Born to English/Scottish Jewish hotelier parents in Brisbane in 1860, Hannah Maclurcan (nee Phillips, formerly Wigham) was a signicant Australian hotelier, publican, food writer. She grew up in hotels, working every section starting in the kitchens. By 1875 (aged 15) she was managing one of the family's hotels. Married in 1880, she was widowed, and in 1887 she married Donald Maclurcan, a hotelier. Together they ran significant hotels in Townsville, Queensland. In 1898 she self-published her Cookery Book in Townsville, which was to run to 20 editions by 1930. In 1901 she and her husband took on the lease of the Wentworth Hotel Sydney, and after she was widowed a third time in 1903, she managed the hotel herself, buying the freehold in 1912 and turning the Wentworth into a grand hotel renowned for its fine cuisine and cold buffets; the centre of Sydney society and the favourite of celebrity guests (including The Prince of Wales in 1920). Hannah Maclurcan continued as the Managing Director of the Wentworth Hotel until 1932. One of Australia's early 'local' cookery books, 'Mrs Maclurcan's Cookery Book' includes recipes using indigenous, local and tropical ingredients (e.g. pineapple, prickly pear, rosellas, kangaroo, wallaby, barramundi) and arguably shows the influence of Chinese immigration and labour in Far North Queensland at the time (e.g. Beche-de-Mer Soup, Devilled Whitebait, Fried Rice with chili, and the use of fresh (not powdered) ginger in Kangaroo tail soup & other dishes). A number of Jewish recipes are also included and seperately identified. This 1908 edition also incorporates recipes relevant to the establishment of the Wentworth Hotel as one of the 'Grand Hotels' of the Southern Hemisphere and shows Australian cuisine at the height of Federation, just before World War I. Indicative of the financial success of the author is the lack of advertisments for anything other than her own products, Champagne & High Class Drinks and the Wentworth Hotel. OCLC records only 1 physical copy of this edition held State Library NSW; and only 2 physical copies of any editions held outside of Australia.
