In 1857 Rosti traveled to New York. Then he traveled to Venezuela and Mexico, where he photographed the plantations, towns, general scenery, ,ancient tree at Popotla, and numerous places of interest in Mexico City. In 1861 Rotsi published a full account of the tour, “Uti Emlékezetek Amerikából”. The book was lavishly illustrated with lithographs and engravings by Gusztáv Klette, D. Freemann, and Johann Moritz Rugendas. The majority of the lithographs are based on Rosti’s original photographs and rendered by Gustav Klette. Since the limitations of photograph technology of the time, it was impossible to capture moving figures. So, Rosti and/or Klette added human figures to the drawings that were then prepared for making the lithographs. • O’Hara, Frank, [Jim Dine, illustrator], Arion Press

O’Hara, Frank, [Jim Dine, illustrator], Arion Press PRICE $ 1950.00 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Arion Press 1990 Limited/Numbered Signed Edition, Folio 13" - 23" tall A prominent player in the New York School of poetry, Biotherm is Frank O'Hara's (1926-1966) jagged, free verse, "last long poem" written before his death. Begun in August 1961, said it started only as a small birthday poem to fellow poet Bill Berkson, but he simply wrote until he decided to stop. The poem expanded to expound on other friends, love, the jaggedness of life in New York, art, food, and myriad topics, finally concluding in January 1962. Artist Jim Dine was an acquaintance of O'Hara, a frequent collaborator with Arion Press, and suggested publishing Biotherm to Andrew Hoyem, press founder. Dine painted 42 monochrome illustrations as loose and unbounded as O'Hara's poem. Designing and setting Biotherm were typographic challenges, as much of the poem is structureless, with text 'exploded' into groups and lines. Jim Dine painted over the text sheet proofs to incorporate his art with the text on the page. This 32nd book from Arion Press consists of unbound 22" H. x 15" W. sheets laid loose in a 22 5/8" H. x 15 5/8" W. clamshell portfolio of thin red cloth over boards. Has all 42 required sheets of poetry and illustrations, plus a half-title sheet. Copy 102 of a limited edition of 150 standard copies numbered and signed by Jim Dine. Although the standard edition is comprised of 42 sheets in monochrome, one sheet hand colored by the artist and protected by a tissue guard. In Arion Press catalogs, the full description does not mention this hand colored sheet, but the concise line item in 1990s catalogs contains "42 lithographs by Jim Dine, one hand-colored..." The "hand-colored" mention disappears from later catalogs. All sheets are English T. H. Saunders mouldmade, watermarked Waterford paper, images lithographed by Phelps-Schaefer, then text overprinted letterpress in Spectrum types by Arion Press. A recessed pocket in the clamshell portfolio houses the accompanying volume Companion To Biotherm (for Bill Berkson) : The Last Long Poem of the Late Frank O'Hara (1926-1966). 'Companion' contains Bill Berkson's essay Air and Such, explaining Biotherm and O'Hara's writing. Also included is Berksons quite useful Glossary of Notes on Incidental References, Quotations, and Allusions in Order of Appearance in the Poem. Andrew Hoyem contributed a Publisher's Note detailing the motivations for publishing Biotherm, incorporating Dine's illustrations, and detail about the production of the edition. This large 8vo book is 11" x 7 1/2", saddle stiched into stiff wraps, umpaginated, and 24 pp. Arion Press' meeting the typographic and artistic challenges produced what may be the best exposition of a Frank O'Hara poem. The clamshell portfolio has faint, small waterspots to the front. The front board has a very slight concave dish. The lithographed, printed sheets and accompanying book are clean and in Fine condition, in a clamshell portfolio that's about Near Fine. First American Edition, in the superb Edward Gorey dust jacket, one of his first and finest. 8vo: 256pp. Publisher's brown cloth, spine lettered in white, illustrated dust jacket priced $3.50. About Fine (end leaves lightly offset), apparently unread, jacket about Fine (spine panel toned, as often), but an excellent example. From the collection of bibliophile Donald Kaufmann. Burgess 99. Time 100. Amis’s first novel, which received the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. "Jim may be the single bitterest character in all of English literature; Amis certainly crafts the most brutally accurate description of a hangover ever written. A punishingly, viscerally funny attack on hypocrisy and self-importance in all their many and varied forms, Lucky Jim gave rise to much of the angry-young-man fiction that followed, but it never met its equal." (Time 100) "Widely acknowledged as the quintessential campus novel of the twentieth century." Danger 66,000 Volts TGM 0038 Submission Stage 2 Rem Koolhaas/Office for Metropolitan Architecture PRICE £2000 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Title: Danger 66,000 Volts TGM 0038 Submission ... Publisher: Rem Koolhaas/Office for Metropolitan Architecture Publication Date: 1995 Binding: Soft cover Book Condition: Very Good Edition: 1st Edition 282 x220. 36 unnumbered pages, plus eight large folding plans. Diagrams and images throughout. Original buff covers, spiral bound with orange lettered label torn to open access to the inside. Edition of 35, this is copy number 26. Several minor pencil corrections to text errors. This is the Rem Koolhaas/OMA final proposal to convert Bankside power station into Tate Modern. In July 1994 an international competition launched to find an architect to redesign the Bankside Power Station into a gallery of modern art for the Tate. By November, 148 entrants had been reduced to a shortlist of 6: David Chipperfield; OMA/Rem Koolhaas; Renzo Piano; Tadao Ando; Herzog & de Meuron and Jose Rafael Moneo. In January 1995, Herzog & de Meuron won the competition. OMA probably supplied a copy of this to each of their 7 partners, to 13 more individuals listed in the credits at the back, Davis Langdon & Everest (3 partners) and Richard Gluckman architects, with 13 Tate Trustees, or to 37 in total. However, it states on the last leaf that it was limited to 35 copies only. It is exceptionally rare to find a copy for sale, this could be among the first and the last. None in COPAC. Rem Koolhaas said about Tate Modern The building offers space, but it is not suitable for art, it offers shelter, but it leaks and has to be repaired, it offers a location, but that is also problematic; it offers a beginning, a presence, which could be hard to organize working within contemporary parameters. The building, an object (abject) lesson in symmetry, will be the only museum in the world marooned on a mud bank, twice every 24 hours. It may need drastic strategies of dissociation; a Turneresque blur of brick from which strategies of dissociation will have to rescue / recuperate it. The Tower, strangely invisible in spite of its height, can be partly dismantled, liberated from its substance / mass, as could other sections of the building. In the City, the skeletal will be more noticeable than bulk. Danger: 66,000 volts It is significant that an institution about to enter an electric power station on the wrong site of a notoriously divisive river and needing an architect to help mastermind such a radical two-way transformation, to be financed so far with a virtual budget, is confidently casting on these still theoretical architects at the expense of a collection which as yet resembles, in its eccentricity and incompleteness, not so much a mosaic but an eccentric bubble diagram of the past century's artistic achievement. OMA are one of the most influential architects today. OMA s first UK buildings were Rothschild Bank s headquarters, City of London and Gartnavel Maggie s Centre, Glasgow. The Barbican put on a major exhibition of OMA s work in 2011-2 and OMA won Pritzker Prize 2000 and Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. OMA s work with art spaces went on from this 1995 Tate Modern competition to Prada Transformer (2009) a radical changeable tetrahedron; and design for the Fondazione Prada, St Petersberg s Hermitage Museum, and the Haus der Kunst, Munich. • VIRCHOW, Rudolf - Cellular Pathology as based upon Physiological and Pathological Histology

VIRCHOW, Rudolf - Cellular Pathology as based upon Physiological and Pathological Histology PRICE $ 1000 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile NY: Robert M. De Witt, 1860.8vo. 554 pp., including index. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION Translated from the 2nd edition of the German original. there was also an English edition published by Churchill in London the same year (1860). Small 4to. 554pp. With 144 text wood engravings. Full Contemporary calf, spine in compartments with black Morocco label, some light wear with a crack staring at the bottom of the top board, the text is clean with some light pencil scoring (erasable) and marginalia on a few pages. otherwise, an excellent copy now housed in a custom slipcase. Virchow founded the medical fields of cellular pathology and comparative pathology (comparison of diseases common to humans and animals). His most important work in the field was Cellular Pathology (Die Cellularpathologie in ihrer Begründung auf physiologische und pathologische Gewebelehre) published in 1858, as a collection of his lectures. This is regarded as the basis of modern medical science, and the "greatest advance which scientific medicine had made since its beginning." Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow was a German physician, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor, and politician. He is known as "the father of modern pathology" and as the founder of social medicine, and to his colleagues, the "Pope of medicine." Cellular Pathology (1858), regarded as the root of modern pathology, introduced the third dictum in cell theory: Omnis cellula e cellula ("All cells come from cells"). He was a co-founder of Physikalisch-Medizinische Gesellschaft in 1849 and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pathologie in 1897. He founded journals such as Archiv für Pathologische Anatomie und Physiologie und für Klinische Medicin (with Benno Reinhardt in 1847, later renamed Virchows Archiv), and Zeitschrift für Ethnologie (Journal of Ethnology). Virchow was the first to describe and name diseases such as leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism, and thrombosis. He coined biological terms such as "neuroglia", "agenesis", "parenchyma", "osteoid", "amyloid degeneration", and "spina bifida"; terms such as Virchow's node, Virchow Robin spaces, Virchow Seckel syndrome, and Virchow's triad are named after him. His description of the life cycle of a roundworm Trichinella spiralis influenced the practice of meat inspection. He developed the first systematic method of autopsy and introduced hair analysis in forensic investigation. "Virchow made cellular pathology into a system of overwhelming importance. His main statement of the theory was given in a series of 20 lectures in 1858. The lectures, published in 1858 as his book Die Cellularpathologie in ihrer Begründung auf physiologische und pathologische Gewebenlehre (Cellular Pathology as Based upon Physiological and Pathological Histology ), at once transformed scientific thought in the whole field of biology" (Britannica ). Virchow's theory that the changes in cells account for diseases in organs revolutionized the field of medicine, leading to a profound growth in the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for diseases. • 1904 autograph letter signed from bloodhound breeder C.A. Appley to prospective buyer

1904 autograph letter signed from bloodhound breeder C.A. Appley to prospective buyer PRICE $ 150 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Title: [Autograph letter signed from C.A. Appley to Merto Parkis regarding English bloodhounds] Author: Appley, C.A. Publication: Libertyville, Ill., 1904. Description: Letter in manuscript on letterhead from English bloodhound breeder C.A. Appley of Libertyville, Illinois to prospective buyer Merto Parkis of Michigan City, Indiana, September 29, 1904 (1 sheet; 8.5 x 11 inches). Also included is an additional sheet with printed photos of Dr. Jack and Appley's other bloodhounds (8 x 12 inches, folded to 4 x 8 inches), as well as the postmarked envelope in which the letter was sent, with printed return address and bloodhound images, and recipient name and address in manuscript (4.25 x 9 inches). The letter and additional sheet have light toning and mailing folds, and the envelope has moderate toning and loss at one end where it was opened. Very Good. Appley makes his sales pitch in his letter, stating, "I am a breeder of the old time man tralers [sic]. I have 2 or 3 very fine dog pups for sale, 3 months old, at $20 and $25 each. These pups are the genuine English Blud [sic] Hound, highly pedagreed [sic] and regesterd [sic]. These pups are sired by Dr. Jack, one of the gratest [sic] man tralers [sic] in the state. I paid $300 for him." The header of the letterhead notes that Appley's stock is bred from J.L. Winchell's and Rockwood Kennels. The return address on the envelope reveals an interesting surprise: Not only was Appley a bloodhound breeder, but he was also superintendent of the Lake County Insane Asylum! A fascinating example of correspondence by an early 20th-century breeder of working dogs.
