"Communist plotters, in the United States as elsewhere, are preparing for the conquest of political power. The discerning student, however, should consider how interventionism, under various enticing labels, is setting the stage for the final overthrow of the voluntary society, the market economy and constitutional government. [This work], by a world-famous expert, will prove a valuable aid to understanding in this field. It will help to explain the errors of those who believe a system based on individual freedom can be 'mixed' with socialism." - Foreword. Book clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Binding tight. Front free endpage with offsetting from bookplates of notable book collectors Robert Honeyman IV and Lawrence M. Lande. This quasi-historical tale of witchcraft purported to be a true chronicle set down by William Meinhold. Oscar Wilde praised Lady Duff Gordon’s translation, first published in German in 1843. The Amber Witch was for some time held to be a genuine account of, and contemporary sidelight on, the conditions of the peasantry during the Thirty Years' War, and the attendant obsession with witchcraft and witch-hunting that permeated that era. [Watry] Background Information: Richett’s arranged to have the Vale Press publications printed at the Ballantyne Press as private press books by a carefully chosen selection of compositors, readers, pressmen and binders freed from the everyday demands of the press. [Watry] Charles Ricketts was a British artist, illustrator, author and printer, known for his work as a book designer and typographer and for his costume and scenery designs for plays and operas. Ricketts first made his mark in book production, first as an illustrator, and then as the founder and driving force of the Vale Press (1896–1904), one of the leading private presses of the day, for which he designed the type and illustrations. A disastrous fire at the printers led to the closure of the press, and Ricketts turned increasingly to painting and sculpture over the following two decades. [Tate] Lucie, Lady Duff-Gordon was an English author and translator who wrote as Lucie Gordon. She is best known for her Letters from Egypt, 1863–1865 and Last Letters from Egypt most of which are addressed to her husband, Alexander Duff-Gordon, and her mother, Sarah Austin. Having moved in prominent literary circles in London, she contracted tuberculosis and travelled in 1861 to South Africa for health reasons. She travelled on to Egypt in 1862 where she settled in Luxor, learnt Arabic, and wrote many letters about Egyptian culture, religion, and customs. Her letters are notable for humour, outrage at the ruling Ottomans, and many personal stories from the people around her. [wiki] Full Title: The Amber Witch, The most interesting trial for witchcraft ever known. Printed from an imperfect manuscript by her father, Abraham Schweidler. GIOVIO Paolo – Ragionamento - 1556 / Andrea ALCIATI – Les Emblemes - 1539 PRICE PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile GIOVIO Paolo – Ragionamento di Mons. Paolo Giovio sopra i motti, et disegni d’arme, et d’amore, che communamente chiamano imprese. Con un discorso di Girolamo Ruscelli, intorno allo stesso soggetto – 1556. In Venetia, appresso Giordano Ziletti, all’Insegna della Stella (BOUND WITH:) / Andrea ALCIATI – Les Emblemes de Maistre Andre Alciat, mis en rime francoyse, et puis nagueres reimprime auec curieuse correction– 1539. On les vend a Paris, en la maison de Chrestien Wechel. Full eighteenth-century rigid vellum, with gilt title on a leather label applied to the spine and, handwritten, to the lower edge, sprayed fore-edges, sedicesimo, 16,3 cm; pp. (2b) + (16) + 236 (real 232), 245 + (3b); title pages of both works very lightly stained, rare blooms in the first work, missing the last sheet of Alciati’s which would carry the repeated Wechel letterpress mark on the verso, overall an excellent copy. Ragionamento: letterpress in woodcut on the title page (allegory of the star with the motto “inter omnes”), some talking caps and !nal in woodcut, text in italics. Emblemes: title page almost entirely in Gothic characters, with beautiful letterpress in woodcut representing Pegasus, woodcut caps, introduction in French in Gothic type, followed by Latin text in italics with a French translation always in Gothic type; in total 112 allegorical representations in woodcut (most mid-page, some smaller, some larger, two full-page) of emblems. Graceful and curious juxtaposition of works in some ways similar: the first edition of Giovio’s Ragionamento on Enterprises and the Ruscelli’s Discorso – always on the same theme – and the very rare Latin-French edition of the Emblemata by Alciati. This is the re-edition, also by Wechel, of the first (French) of 1536, which includes the magni!cent woodcut apparatus attributed to Jean Mercure Jollat, composed of more than one hundred allegorical and symbolic woodcuts PURCHASE / MORE INFO More items from Libreria Belriguardo - Italian Rare Books BIRINGUCCIO Vannuccio – Pirotechnia - 1559 See Item GIOVIO Paolo – Ragionamento - 1556 / Andrea ALCIATI – Les Emblemes - 1539 See Item (Cesare BECCARIA) / VOLTAIRE - Dei Delitti e delle Pene / Commentaire sur le livre Des Delits - 1766 See Item PORCACCHI Tommaso – L’isole piu famose del mondo - 1572 See Item GIOVANNELLI Pietro – Cantus Novi Thesauri Musici - 1568 See Item
