- STATE
STATE < Back to Terminology List STATE General Variations within an edition, which are made prior to publication; can include: • alterations due to stop-press insertions, damaged type, etc. • the addition of errata leaves, advertisements. • textual changes affecting page lay-out. • some special-paper copies. This term applies only in connection with the printed pages, and not variations in bindings. (e.g.: a small number of copies of Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls were erroneously printed without the photographer’s credit on the back of the dust jacket. The presses were stopped midway through the first run, the credit was added, and the second state of the first edition resulted.) Previous Next

- ISSUE
ISSUE < Back to Terminology List ISSUE Feature A change, textual or otherwise, made after the book has been published. (e.g.: The first issue of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court has an “s”-like ornament between “The” and “King” on page 59. In the case of many of C. S. Forester’s books, sheets were printed but not bound at the same time; when they were, sometimes years later, they were bound in differently colored bindings. The color of the binding then became an issue point .) Previous Next

[6], vii-xv, [3], 3-607, [1] pp. Navy blue cloth with gold lettering, twin gold rules, and publisher's device in gilt on the spine. Price of £5.00 net on the front flap of the dust jacket. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. A Near Fine book with some minor wear to the extremities in a Near Fine lightly-rubbed dust jacket. SEP, Wenar, "John Rawls". Slater 757. John Rawls was one of the best-known and most influential figures in political and moral philosophy in the later 20th and early 21st centuries. A Theory of Justice is the first book in which he laid out his theory of justice as fairness and is widely considered to be his magnum opus. In addition to being one of the landmark works in political philosophy, the book has been extraordinarily influential outside of academic philosophy, particularly in the legal community. Rawls work is clearly within the tradition of classic liberalism, but is filled with original and engaging arguments and has spawned a vast literature. A very attractive copy of this essential and justly renowned work in political philosophy. - SPLAYED
SPLAYED < Back to Terminology List SPLAYED Defect Splay is a concave warp or curvature of a book's covers, curving away from the ends of the text block . Splayed covers occur more often than bowed covers. There are many causes of splay: Stresses in the boards ' directional grain can warp them. A change in the boards' moisture content can cause their directional grain to warp in one direction. Leather, vellum , cloth, or paper covering the boards can shrink more or less than the boards and warp them. Pastedowns can shrink more or less than the boards and warp them. The image shows two leather-bound press proofs from the Windmill Press, each copy being splayed. Previous Next
