  • THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS OR MIRTH AND MARVELS - BUMPUS BINDING

THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS OR MIRTH AND MARVELS - BUMPUS BINDING PRICE $4,000 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Ingoldsby, Thomas (Richard Harris Barham). THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS OR MIRTH AND MARVELS. London: Richard Bentley, 1840; 1842; 1847. First edition. Hardcover. 3 vol. 8vo. [3], iv-v, [4], 2-338, [4]; [5], vi-vii, [4], 2-288, [2]; [5], iv-vi, [3], 2-364, [2] pp. Full contemporary red morocco, spines in six compartments with gilt decorations and lettering, boards ruled in gilt; all edges gilt. Bound by John Bumpus, a Victorian bookseller and bookbinder. Volume one illustrated with a decorated title page and decorative initials, and six additional plates, (etchings). Volume two with a decorative title page, seven etched plates, three in-text woodcuts, and numerous decorative initials. Volume three with a decorative title page, and six additional plates, two of which are portraits of the author, Richard Barham (the other four are etchings, two by George Cruikshank, and two by John Leech). George Cruikshank, John Leech, and John Tenniel all contributed to the illustrations for the Ingoldsby series. Engraved bookplate of William Forbes Morgan (ca. 1900) on the front pastedowns. A Very Good or better set with the rear joint of volume one discreetly restored, a tiny spot of wear to a raised band on volume three; plates (and a few leaves) show scattered foxing. Kunitz 34-35. NCBEL 365. Packer 25. Sadleir 27-29. Our First Series contains what Sadleir purports to be the earliest version of the error on page 236: "In what order should these be ranged? From the point of view of publishing procedure (though without any authority) I suggest the most likely sequence to have been as follows (a) Private, with incomplete Ballad; (b) Public, ditto; (c) Public, with 236 blank ... (d) Public, with Ballad complete". Our copy of the first series corresponds with the Privately printed First Series in a few respects: its title page is printed in dark purple and black ink like the private edition, and it contains the incomplete ballad on page 236, like the private edition. We therefore consider our First Series to be the first issue of the first trade edition. Our Second Series corresponds with Sadleir's description of the first edition of the Second Series in every way, except the final etching lacks the imprint dated 1843. Our Series Three copy corresponds exactly with Sadleir's stated points. Volume three contains a biography of Barham. The Ingoldsby Legends were far and away Barham's most successful publication. Barham was an English clergyman, humorist, and writer. Kunitz refers to Barham's writings and Barham himself as "unmistakably Kentish". Some of the ghost stories contained in the First Series are said to be from a Mrs. Hughes, an enormous influence on Barham's career. She pushed him to complete and publish his first novel, My Cousin Nicholas. The Ingoldsby stories were first published in Bentley's Miscellany, a magazine, in the late 1830s. They were edited by Charles Dickens. Richard Bentley, a friend of Barham, decided to release them in book form. Barham's series contains ghost stories, short literary prose, a poem grieving the death of his son, and general parodies of English life. Though largely popular, Barham's work was sometimes criticized for its parody of the Pope and Catholic doctrine. An avid drinker and cat lover (only writing when a cat attended him), Barham is remembered largely for The Ingoldsby Legends (a work once so popular, an average schoolboy would have passages memorized). A finely bound, beautiful set of a landmark in humorous English prose. In 1899, Keeler was invited to join other elite scientists on the Harriman Alaska Expedition, to study and document the coast of Alaska. In 1857 Rosti traveled to New York. Then he traveled to Venezuela and Mexico, where he photographed the plantations, towns, general scenery, ,ancient tree at Popotla, and numerous places of interest in Mexico City. In 1861 Rotsi published a full account of the tour, “Uti Emlékezetek Amerikából”. The book was lavishly illustrated with lithographs and engravings by Gusztáv Klette, D. Freemann, and Johann Moritz Rugendas. The majority of the lithographs are based on Rosti’s original photographs and rendered by Gustav Klette. Since the limitations of photograph technology of the time, it was impossible to capture moving figures. So, Rosti and/or Klette added human figures to the drawings that were then prepared for making the lithographs. • O’Hara, Frank, [Jim Dine, illustrator], Arion Press

O’Hara, Frank, [Jim Dine, illustrator], Arion Press PRICE $ 1950.00 PURCHASE / MORE INFO View Member Profile Arion Press 1990 Limited/Numbered Signed Edition, Folio 13" - 23" tall A prominent player in the New York School of poetry, Biotherm is Frank O'Hara's (1926-1966) jagged, free verse, "last long poem" written before his death. Begun in August 1961, said it started only as a small birthday poem to fellow poet Bill Berkson, but he simply wrote until he decided to stop. The poem expanded to expound on other friends, love, the jaggedness of life in New York, art, food, and myriad topics, finally concluding in January 1962. Artist Jim Dine was an acquaintance of O'Hara, a frequent collaborator with Arion Press, and suggested publishing Biotherm to Andrew Hoyem, press founder. Dine painted 42 monochrome illustrations as loose and unbounded as O'Hara's poem. Designing and setting Biotherm were typographic challenges, as much of the poem is structureless, with text 'exploded' into groups and lines. Jim Dine painted over the text sheet proofs to incorporate his art with the text on the page. This 32nd book from Arion Press consists of unbound 22" H. x 15" W. sheets laid loose in a 22 5/8" H. x 15 5/8" W. clamshell portfolio of thin red cloth over boards. Has all 42 required sheets of poetry and illustrations, plus a half-title sheet. Copy 102 of a limited edition of 150 standard copies numbered and signed by Jim Dine. Although the standard edition is comprised of 42 sheets in monochrome, one sheet hand colored by the artist and protected by a tissue guard. In Arion Press catalogs, the full description does not mention this hand colored sheet, but the concise line item in 1990s catalogs contains "42 lithographs by Jim Dine, one hand-colored..." The "hand-colored" mention disappears from later catalogs. All sheets are English T. H. Saunders mouldmade, watermarked Waterford paper, images lithographed by Phelps-Schaefer, then text overprinted letterpress in Spectrum types by Arion Press. A recessed pocket in the clamshell portfolio houses the accompanying volume Companion To Biotherm (for Bill Berkson) : The Last Long Poem of the Late Frank O'Hara (1926-1966). 'Companion' contains Bill Berkson's essay Air and Such, explaining Biotherm and O'Hara's writing. Also included is Berksons quite useful Glossary of Notes on Incidental References, Quotations, and Allusions in Order of Appearance in the Poem. Andrew Hoyem contributed a Publisher's Note detailing the motivations for publishing Biotherm, incorporating Dine's illustrations, and detail about the production of the edition. This large 8vo book is 11" x 7 1/2", saddle stiched into stiff wraps, umpaginated, and 24 pp. Arion Press' meeting the typographic and artistic challenges produced what may be the best exposition of a Frank O'Hara poem. The clamshell portfolio has faint, small waterspots to the front. The front board has a very slight concave dish. The lithographed, printed sheets and accompanying book are clean and in Fine condition, in a clamshell portfolio that's about Near Fine. First American Edition, in the superb Edward Gorey dust jacket, one of his first and finest. 8vo: 256pp. Publisher's brown cloth, spine lettered in white, illustrated dust jacket priced $3.50. About Fine (end leaves lightly offset), apparently unread, jacket about Fine (spine panel toned, as often), but an excellent example. From the collection of bibliophile Donald Kaufmann. Burgess 99. Time 100. Amis’s first novel, which received the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. "Jim may be the single bitterest character in all of English literature; Amis certainly crafts the most brutally accurate description of a hangover ever written. A punishingly, viscerally funny attack on hypocrisy and self-importance in all their many and varied forms, Lucky Jim gave rise to much of the angry-young-man fiction that followed, but it never met its equal."
